I don't think it had much to do with PowerPC architecture or pricing or feeling unloved by IBM. In fact, I don't think it had much to do with the actual processor hardware at all.I think it's all about the networking of the immediate future.

　AppleがPowerPCとおさらばしたのは、PowerPCアーキテクチャの発熱量やコストパフォーマンスなどのアーキテクチャ固有の問題のせいではなく、ネットワークの問題だと主張している。

Apple looks at this up-and-coming networking protocol that will be supported by Microsoft's upcoming Longhorn OS. It sees the advantages it will give to users if implemented correctly. Apple realizes it will be shut out of these networks for years using its current hardware. Apple collectively freaks.

　MicroSoft社が推進しているオープン規格のTNC(Trusted Network Connect)という次世代のプロトコルが、Longhornでサポートされる予定であり、Apple社は、PowerPCのままだと、Trusted Networkより（一時的に）乗り遅れることを憂慮したようである。
　TNCは、ネットワークに接続されているクライアントPCのセキュリティレベルを判断し、予め定義されたポリシーに基づき、ネットワークへのアクセスを制御するこのアーキテクチャで、60社以上の Trusted Computing Group（TCG）のメンバー企業によって開発されており、次世代ネットワークアーキテクチャとして注目すべきオープン規格です。

TNC uses a number of ways to authenticate the supplicant trying to join the network, one of which is the hardware Trusted Computing Module bolted on to TCG-compliant computers. Now, here's where the trail starts to heat up. The TCM won't be available on non-Intel machines any time soon, since it uses Intel silicon to implement the functions needed. If you want to play in a TNC-defined network, you need to be on Intel hardware (at least for the near term).

　TCM(Trusted Computing Module)は、当分の間は、PowerPCなど非Intel系チップではサポートされないことを考慮して、Intelへの乗り換えを決定したようである。
　最近、Intelチップは、セキュア機能やユビキタス機能などの様々な機能を統合する傾向にあり、この機能を利用した方が、有利と判断しての戦略変更だったとも言えそうである。
　個性あふれるMacが、心臓部にIntelを採用することにより、モディティ化しつつあるセキュア機能やユビキタス機能を取り込んだ上で、どのようにrestructureするか、大変興味があるところである。最近、ちょっとMacがマンネリ化してきたという感じはしてきたので、ちょうど良いタイミングでの破壊的イノベーションであるように感じました。
　特に、これまでは、マイノリティ（小人数派）のPowerPCの上にて、オリジナリティの機能をMacやMac OS Xに持たせることができたが、（ただし、Mac OS Xは、すぐにWindowsにキャッチアップされているが） 今度は、土俵が同一（チップが同一）ということもあり、ハード及びソフトをどのように差別化するのかが見所であると思いました。
